This webinar aims to close the gap in practice knowledge for orthopaedic surgeons in centers with and without established infrastructure and protocols for multidisciplinary management of medically complex patients with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders who are preparing for surgery. The webinar will focus on pre-operative optimization and include concrete tools for attendees and an opportunity for case discussion, with the potential for future follow-up webinars on intra-operative and post-operative management. Educational goals include increased understanding of the risks associated with surgical intervention, the role of multidisciplinary collaboration, pre-operative assessment including cardiopulmonary, nutritional and psychological assessment, and informed consent and shared decision-making (including patient and family perspectives).

Learning Objectives:
  • Attendees will improve their understanding of the role of multidisciplinary collaboration in preparation for surgery including for informed consent and shared decision-making in medically-complex patients with cerebral palsy and neuromuscular conditions.
  • Attendees will learn how to accomplish a thorough pre-operative assessment by engaging other disciplines, including cardiopulmonary, nutritional and psychological assessment.
  • Attendees will receive an example of a pre-operative chart/checklist as well as post-webinar resources to apply to their practice.
