The Children's Silver Service Foundation, founded by Staff of the Chicago Shrine more than 25 years ago, organizes biannual (April and October) trips to Cali and Buga, Colombia in order to provide clinical and operative care for non-spinal pediatric orthopedic conditions. We care for a wide array of post-traumatic, congenital, metabolic, genetic, and neuromuscular disorders, working closely with pediatric orthopaedic staff and residents from Club Noel Children's Hospital and the Universidad del Valle, Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Approximately six surgeons and two residents, in addition to a full complement of nursing and anesthesia staff, participate in each trip operating on approximately 45 patients each trip. We work closely with Casa de Colombia, a well-organized and well-funded local charity, to triage patients requiring care and to maintain long-term follow-up.

The Staff of Sacre Coeur Hospital in MIlot would welcome any POSNA member who would like to volunteer a week or more to treating children with orthopaedic problems. The hospital has a full time Haitian orthopaedist but could use help. More important than treating the children is to educate the Haitian staff so they can care on after the volunteer goes home. The hospital is supported by the CRUDEM foundation and has Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, NJ as its Sister Hospital. The POSNA volunteer can either be part of an orthopedic team including surgeons who treat adults or can go individually covering the Club Foot Program.

Pediatric orthopaedic teams invited to volunteer for missions to Adventist Hospital in Port au Prince. There are orthopedic clinics three times weekly, including a clubfoot clinic, and surgery days twice weekly. Additional surgery days can be scheduled, if you desire. Your team should consist of at least the following: anesthesiologist, OR nurse, and Recovery Room nurse. Team size can range from four to fourteen. The patient load will be mostly children, but may include some adults if you like. Most of the pediatric orthopaedic problems relate to clubfoot, arthrogryposis, cerebral palsy, other congenital anomalies and trauma. Teaching opportunities are available, for the local physicians and nurses, both by working together, and by lecture format. You should be confident, hard working, flexible, be a team player, and have a pleasant personality.

My work in Haiti has been as an advisor to CURE Clubfoot Worldwide Haiti (CCW Haiti), the Haitian Ponseti Clubfoot program. The program was started and is administrated by CURE Clubfoot Worldwide which is a subsidiary of CURE International. Our main teaching clinic is at Hopital Adventiste in Carrefour on the western edge of Port au Prince (PaP). In addition, CCW Haiti administrates eight other clinics in Haiti, in Les Cayes, Jacmel, PaP, St. Marc, Mirebalais, Cap Haitien, Milot, and Fort Liberty. Francel Alexis MD and Eldine Jacques MD are Haitian pediatric orthopedic surgeons who supervise the clinics. Each clinic is staffed with a counselor and at least two cast technicians. Although we do not currently need POSNA volunteers strictly for the clubfoot clinics, we very much appreciate the help of POSNA volunteers doing general pediatric orthopedic work at hospitals associated with our clinics. Children’s Orthopedics Education for Developing Nations (COEDN) invites active and retired pediatric orthopedic surgeons to “train the trainers” in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. A structured fellowship surgical training program commenced in September 2016. We are inviting volunteer surgeons for 2- 4 week assignments to help continue to train 3 fellows all there is to know about pediatric orthopedics (no spine surgery). The trainees will stay on at the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI) and join the only pedipod (the program director) currently in Tanzania, a country of 50 million (50% of the population is under 18 y.o.). This core of pedipods will become the nucleus for the first permanent accredited fellowship training program for the central and east Africa region. Needless to say, sightseeing opportunities are incredible and numerous, including local beautiful east coast resorts, Zanzibar, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Olduvai Gorge, Ngorongoro crater and multiple safaris including the Serengeti. Volunteer opportunities are available for spouses.

COSESCA, a 14 country consortium of countries in East/Central/Southern Africa, is in charge of surgical residency education and board certification. Every year in December oral board exams are carried out for the senior graduate candidates. The organization recruits overseas examiners who are willing to travel (self - pay unfortunately) to participate in the process. They are looking for a pediatric orthopedic examiner. This process is promised to be a great experience, a unique and fascinating opportunity to meet surgeons from around the region and spend time with them. Exams are held in a local hospital in the region with real patients, a very different experience than in the US. This year's meeting is in Kampala, Uganda. Orientation is Sunday Dec 1 for an examiners, and exams will be Dec 1-2. Directly following exams you are welcome to stay and participate in the annual COSESCA meeting.

The Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children is a pediatric orthopaedic facility with 72 beds in Banepa, Nepal, just outside the Kathmandu valley. A variety of conditions are treated, and clubfoot (33%) and cerebral palsy (17%) represent half the volume. The surgeons are doing Ponseti method for children up to 10 years of age, and lots of work with ringed fixators for bone transport and deformity work. A limited number of scoliosis cases are performed as well.
