- The Award money was used to start a Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship Endowment. I have a number of individuals, different from my clinical fellows, who come to learn new research approaches to solve pediatric problems. Unlike clinical fellows, the students doing research cannot support themselves. The Huene money acted as a catalytic seed and other monies have been added to strengthen the endowment so it will be self-perpetuated. This endowment currently supports an orthopaedic surgeon from Pakistan doing research using a combination of molecular biologic, histologic, and immunohistochemical techniques, he is trying to determine why rapid or excessive distraction leads to nonunion in lengthening. He will no doubt bring this knowledge back to his country and train others. That way, the effect of the Huene Award will have its impact worldwide and on generations yet unborn.
