Top Gun

Thursday, December 5

Surgical simulation is becoming an increasingly important way to teach orthopaedic skills, optimize clinical outcomes, and maximize patient safety, and Top Gun continues to be one of the main highlights at IPOS®.

Our goal is to raise the profile of surgical simulation in our field and to promote the practice of orthopaedic skills by trainees. Through the hard work of IPOS® faculty members and staff –as well as the generosity of the POSNA, Arthrex, MD Orthopaedics, Medtronic, NuVasive, OrthoFix, and OrthoPediatrics - we've created a fun program consisting of 6 different motor skills stations:

  1. Arthroscopic Loose Body Retrieval (SPORTS) >
  2. Circular Frame for Deformity Correction >
  3. Flexible Intramedullary Nail for Femur Fracture >
  4. Pedicle Screw Placement and Spinal Deformity Correction (SPINE) >
  5. Ponseti Clubfoot Cast Application >
  6. Team Challenge >

Participants are discretely judged by IPOS® faculty on their performance, using objective standardized assessments of technical skills (OSATS). There is a “team challenge” in which three participants work together as a team on one spine patient.
