Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital of Cleveland
Presentations & Publications:
The financial support from the Huene Award was used principally to support our Pediatric Orthopaedic Spine Database. This allowed continued investigations on decreasing perioperative blood loss following spinal deformity surgery, postoperative pain management, and management of early onset scoliosis. The latter has been primarily in conjunction with the Growing Spine Study Group. Specific studies supported by this award have included the role of Amicar in decreasing perioperative blood loss in neuromuscular scoliosis, intrathecal morphine in decreasing postoperative pain in idiopathic scoliosis, growing rod treatment of various types of early onset scoliosis and, most recently, the role of a bipolar sealer device in spinal surgery as an adjunct in decreasing perioperative blood in idiopathic scoliosis. These studies have led to numerous publications that have improved the care of children and adolescents nationally and internationally.
