  • Create a thorough template for your surgical notes and build on them throughout the year
  • Commit to creating an independent written preoperative plan for each case
  • Cultivate a relationship with a mentor and use them to learn the nuances of the craft that aren’t in a textbook
  • Seek out job opportunities from well-respected sources and by engaging in regular dialogue with your mentors
  • Read regularly and commit to a schedule
  • Meet with your program director(s) regularly, both formally and informally
