Pediatric psychologists are well integrated in many specialty areas of care, including pediatric oncology and endocrinology clinics. The integration of psychology within pediatric orthopaedic clinics is less well developed, however, in part due to a lack of understanding regarding how pediatric psychologists may contribute to the care of patients with orthopaedic diagnoses. This webinar will invite attendees to learn from three pediatric orthopaedic surgeon and psychology collaborator dyads. We will review (1) the role of psychology in the pre-surgical assessment and education process for pediatric patients preparing for orthopaedic surgery, (2) the role of psychology in supporting pediatric patients’ postoperative pain management following orthopaedic intervention, and (3) the role of psychology in supporting youth athletes coping with injuries and return to sport/play.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learning Objective 1: Review the role of psychology in the presurgical assessment and education process for pediatric patients and families preparing to undergo orthopedic intervention. Identify individual, familial, and logistical risk factors that may impact treatment success.
  • Learning Objective 2: Review the role of psychology in postoperative pain management following pediatric orthopedic intervention. Discuss specific psychological strategies that are beneficial in supporting patients postoperatively.
  • Learning Objective 3: Review the role of psychology in the treatment of youth athletes when coping with injury and returning to play / sport. Identify individual and familial factors risk factors that may impact coping and activity resumption.
