A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Operative vs. Non-Operative Treatment for Type II Supracondylar Humeral Fractures in Children

Surgical treatment of displaced supracondylar humerus (SCH) fractures is one of the most common procedures performed by orthopaedic surgeons. There is some controversy regarding the appropriate treatment of Type II SCH fractures with some centers advocating for immediate surgical treatment, while others recommend initial non-operative management with closed reduction and casting. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of these two different strategies when initiating treatment of displaced, Type II SCH fractures in children. An economic decision model will be built to quantify the costs and utilities associated with each strategy.
Was the primary outcome measure of success reached?
Pending. During the course of this project (which is ongoing), the research strategy was modified. We initially were going to utilize certain publicly available databases from the HCUP website. After further research, the NY State SPARCS database was thought to be more a more robust resource to answer our research question. Unfortunately, because of a data corruption issue, obtaining the database has been delayed until recently (recently received download link for database on 1/3/2020). Therefore, we are currently in the early stages of data management and analysis.
