Douglas W. McKay, MD

Dr. Douglas William McKay of Milbridge, Maine, the youngest son born to Hugh Gordon McKay and Elizabeth Jellison McKay on March 10, 1927 in Howland, Maine, passed away peacefully at his home on May 26, 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Elinor McKay, his three children, Anne, Hugh and Heather, his son-in-law Jim Boyd, daughter-in-law Lisa Scheer and his grandchildren Alex, Will, Kate and Peter.

Dr. McKay graduated from U.S. Maine Maritime Academy, University of Maine and Tufts Medical School. As a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon he had a distinguished career serving as Chief Surgeon of Carrie Tingley Hospital for Children (T.or C.,NM'61-67), Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children (Shreveport,La.'69-'72) and Chairman of Othopaedics, Children's Hospital (WashDC,'72-'88). He acted as Department Chair and Professor at numerous prestigious Universities and served as an Certifying Examiner in charge of Pediatrics for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. McKay was a founder of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, President of the Louisiana Orthopaedic Society, the Washington DC Orthopedic Society, and Pediatric Orthopaedic Society as well maintaining a general orthopeadics private practice (La.'88-'03). He was a member of the American Orthopaedic Association and was recognized as a world leader in the treatment and correction of childhood deformities including clubfeet and scoliosis.

Most importantly, Dr. McKay will be remembered by his family and the many patients whose lives were profoundly improved by his care.
