Hall of Fame

The POSNA Hall of Fame provides an enduring history to honor those POSNA members who have displayed dedication to the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, teaching and mentoring, studying musculoskeletal conditions in children and caring for children with musculoskeletal conditions. Nominations for inductees are taken each fall by the POSNA membership and selected by the Awards Committee and members of the Hall of Fame.  

Hall of Fame Categories: Leadership, Diversity, Teacher, Humanitarian, Hero, Triumph over Adversity, Pioneer, Contributions to Literature, Home Person (one who does the real work while others go to meetings), Fox-Hole Buddy (reliable person when the stakes are high), Exceptional Clinician, POSNA Service

Eligibility:

• POSNA member for at least 15 years
• Minimum age of 60 years
• Inaugural Class (2019) includes all previous Distinguished Achievement Award recipients

Dr. Norris Carroll dedicated his distinguished career to pediatric orthopaedics and was nominated for the POSNA Hall of Fame for his literature contributions, teaching skills and outstanding patient care. 
 
Dr. Carroll was born in New Brunswick, Canada where he attended primary school, high school, and the University of New Brunswick. He went to Dalhousie University Medical School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He completed three  years of rural general practice before his residency training at the University of Toronto. His first fellowship was in 1967 with Dr. Marvin Tile at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto and then he was a R.S. McLaughlin Traveling Fellow to the United Kingdom and Europe in 1968 and 1969.
 
After completing his training, Dr. Carroll began his teaching and orthopaedic career with a faculty appointment to the SickKids Pediatric Orthopaedics Division at the University of Toronto.  In 1986 he moved to Chicago and became Chief of Orthopaedics at Children’s Memorial Hospital. He rose to the rank of Professor at Northwestern University, served as the Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and is now an Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. His career academic highlights go well beyond his numerous publications and booked chapters.  He has been invited to teach on 6 continents and served as Visiting Professor at least 30 times,  including 16 Named Professorships.

Dr. Carroll has served POSNA and orthopaedics throughout his career by helping establish multidisciplinary clinics for children with complex neuromuscular conditions while also helping introduce arthroscopy and hip ultrasonography to pediatric orthopaedics. He chaired the POSNA Program Committee in addition to serving on the Annual Meeting and Specialty Day Committees and was the Presidential Guest Speaker at the POSNA Annual Meeting in Vancouver in 2000. Dr. Carroll has been honored to win numerous resident teaching awards at Northwestern and when asked to describe some of his fondest accomplishments, Dr. Carroll is most proud of the achievements of his illustrious fellows and the multitude of residents he taught over the years that that included many who decided to make children’s orthopaedics their life’s calling. Dr. Carroll’s clinical interests ranged from embryogenesis of the clavicle, complex deformity correction, to assistive devices for children with neuromuscular disorders, and limb salvage showing that he was truly well rounded in all aspects of pediatric orthopaedics.

Dr. Carroll stressed the importance of being prepared for Hospital and University politics, by taking leadership courses early in one’s career.  He taught that it was critical to “listen to the patient and the parents, as they are telling you the diagnosis”.  He has always been known to offer wisdom and advice to younger generations.  In his own words, “Do not neglect your hobbies.  They will be a lifesaver in retirement when you become a PIP (Previously Important Person).”  Perhaps most important, he stresses to us all to “Enjoy what you do and have fun every day.”
