Dr. Luther Calvin Fisher III, M.D., 80, passed away on July 1, 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Fisher was born on July 12, 1935 and grew up in Pensacola Florida. He was married to Mary Martha Craig on December 30, 1957 and together they had seven children. He attended Emory University for three years before being accepted to
Tulane University Medical School where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1960. After graduating from medical school he completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi in 1965.
Dr. Fisher practiced medicine for 35 years and lived with his family in many places including Jackson, Mississippi, Houston, Texas, Pensacola, Florida, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Taos, New Mexico. During the
Vietnam War he served in the US
Army at Fort Gordon, Georgia, treating wounded soldiers. From 1968-1971 he lived in Ethiopia with his family and worked as a medical missionary providing medical care, primarily reconstructive surgery for leprosy patients. He also trained Ethiopian doctors and was instrumental in bringing orthopedic surgery to the country. Following his return from Ethiopia, he practiced medicine for three years in Pensacola, Florida, before moving to Houston, Texas where he worked in a free clinic and was very involved in his church. In 1977, Dr. Fisher was recruited to join the faculty at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he served as an Orthopedic Surgeon and taught medical students and residents until his retirement in 1995.
Dr. Fisher is survived by his sister, Cameron Smith, and his seven children, Luther (Luke) Fisher IV, Marion Hearon, Claire Kirkpatrick, Steven Fisher, Lorenzo (Lenzy) Fisher, Peter Fisher and Joshua Fisher.
