In Memoriam

Alfred D. Grant, MD
- 2016

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and NYU Langone Medical Center mourn the passing of our esteemed and respected colleague Dr. Alfred Grant, clinical professor of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Grant has been a member of the Hospital for Joint Diseases community since he started his residency in 1962.  Since then, he has been a leader in the development of the now nationally and internationally recognized Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics.  His passion was for the care of children with orthopaedic and neuromuscular disorders, and he devoted his career to helping this underserved population. He served as director of the Center for Neuromuscular and Developmental Disorders, treating thousands of patients through the years who would return to see him well into their adult years.  He was also one of the first surgeons in the United States to recognize the value of the Ilizarov technique for the treatment of pediatric orthopaedic conditions.

An outstanding and gifted clinician and surgeon, Dr. Grant was also a dedicated educator.  He trained over 300 orthopaedic residents and fellows, creating a legacy of patient care that will live on for decades.  In 2015, he was honored by the graduating residents as “Teacher of the Year” in recognition of his commitment to their education.  He contributed over 100 publications and book chapters to the orthopaedic literature, many of which continue to be cited for their importance and value in the field.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Ellen, to his daughters Laura and Michele, his seven grandchildren, and to all the members of the Grant family.
