Shanmuga S. Jayakumar was born April 4, 1936 in Coimbatore, Madras, India. He was a graduate of the Madras Medical College at University of Madras in India. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residencies at Howard University in Washington D.C. and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Pennsylvania. He completed his Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Fellowship at the Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, where he would also join their staff as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon until his retirement in 2011. His major areas of interest included spine, clubfoot, tarsal coalition, spina bifida, and arthrogryposis. He held multiple academic positions: Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Affiliate physician at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio; Honorary Visiting Professor at Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in India, and was a member of the Board of Directors at Christiana Care in Delaware. He is survived by his wife, Mrinaini; daughter, Dr. Anitha Patel; son, Sun; and grandchildren, Anisa and Dhruv Patel. Dr. Jayakumar passed away March 13, 2013, while in India.
