Leslie Meyer, MD
1919 - 2009

Leslie Meyer, Chief Emeritus of the Shriners Hospital Greenville Unit died in October of 2009. Dr. Meyer attended medical school at the University of Nebraska and served in the South Pacific in World War II. He took residency at Duke in 1947 and practiced in Greenville. He joined the staff of the Shriners hospital in 1949 and remained on the staff for 55 years. From 1978 to 1988 he served as Chief of Staff.

In 1954 he worked with United Cerebral Palsy to open a school for children with special needs at a time when there was no such program available in the public school system. The Meyer Center for Special Children, as it is now known, continues to this day as a testimony to Dr. Meyer's commitment to children. He is survived by his wife, De Ila, daughter Barbara, sons David and Paul, and four grandchildren.
