S. Terry Canale, MD

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of our colleague, friend, mentor, and past POSNA president (1989-1990), Dr. S. Terry Canale. Dr. Canale passed away Sunday, August 13, 2023.
Dr. Canale spent his entire academic career, starting in 1974, at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic, specializing in pediatric orthopaedics. He was one of the early pioneers in the field of pediatric sports medicine. His professional accomplishments are numerous and include being the former Chairman at the University of Tennessee and the Chief of Staff at the Campbell Clinic. He mentored hundreds of orthopaedic residents, medical students, and researchers over his career. He served as editor for five editions of Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics.
He held numerous leadership positions outside of Campbell Clinic, including the president of POSNA, AAOS, and Orthopaedics Overseas. His contributions to orthopaedic surgery are numerous and include the development of the AAOS Orthopaedic Learning Center, the Sign you Site patient safety program, and the Leadership Fellows Program. He had a passion for overseas mission work which led to his leadership efforts with Orthopaedics Overseas.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Canale was an accomplished artist and his paintings have been featured in national exhibitions. He was an avid tennis and pickleball player and world traveler. He and his wife, Sissie, have two children, Haines Loden and Robb Canale, and five grandchildren.
Most of all, Dr. Canale will be remembered as a visionary leader, wise teacher, trusted confidant, and loyal friend who no matter how busy he was, always had time to share a funny story, give some wise advice, or sit and listen to a child/parent in need.
