IPOS® 2023 Meeting Recap including a message from Director, Award Winners from the week, and more

Dear POSNA Members:

For those of you who were fortunate to attend IPOS® 2023 in Orlando, we hope you enjoyed the sun and the fun of connecting with colleagues once again. This IPOS® was bigger than ever. The program was full of pediatric orthopaedic experts getting shoulder to shoulder with participants: both young and more seasoned.

We covered traditional topics such as the essentials of pediatric orthopaedics, hip osteotomies, deformity correction, and our favorite session—Author's Preferred Techniques where we watched the experts demonstrate how they perform difficult and technical surgery through video. As we did last year, the subspecialty sections were run specifically by subject matter experts who helped select the faculty, drive the content, and keep it fresh. This led to significant innovations in Hip, Spine, Sports, Upper & Lower Extremity, Cerebral Palsy, and Foot & Ankle. We had general sessions with a packed house for trauma and issues you’ll face on call and a session devoted to complex syndromes emphasizing the need for comprehensive knowledge and a multidisciplinary approach. The Top Gun competition was a real treat.

We also innovated with a competition in our trauma session, more stations for clubfoot casting, Pavlik application, and halo on the go. There was once again a tremendous effort to ensure that our advanced practice provider partners were involved in the planning and delivery of specific APP content. This year, with record attendance, they wowed us with interactive sessions that brought learning and fun together. This has always been one of the main tenets of IPOS®. The add-on course for the mid-career surgeon (IPOS® XC) has grown, in which we covered leadership, teaching, mentorship, performance, and more to achieve “wild success” in pediatric orthopaedics.

Our industry partners also created educational content, allowing meeting participants to literally get “hands-on” experience with the instruments that can change the lives of children we treat. This collaboration, unique to IPOS®, allows for a learning lab of training and early experience making it more meaningful than sitting in a chair and watching passively.

This brings us to the end: IPOS® is and always will be about active learning. This learning then becomes more meaningful and durable—it “sticks,” which can make all the difference. We would be remiss not to thank the amazing POSNA staff who were instrumental in coordinating this complex meeting. We hope you will mark your calendars for IPOS® 2024, December 3-7, in Orlando, FL. See you next year!

Top Gun Surgical Skills Competition 
Congratulations to first place winner Stefano Cardin, MD; second place winner Marco Gupton, DO; and third place winner Ian Hollyer, MD, who are the IPOS® 2023 Top Gun Surgical Skills Competition winners. The focus of this competition is to raise the profile of surgical simulation in our field and to promote the practice of orthopaedic skills by trainees. Thank you to IPOS® faculty members as well as industry sponsors Arthrex, Globus Medical/NuVasive, MD Orthopaedics, Medtronic, Orthofix, and OrthoPediatrics for supporting this event.

Author's Preferred Techniques
The Author's Preferred Techniques video-based session is a highlight of IPOS®. Each participating faculty member presents her or his preferred surgical technique for a particular procedure. The audience then votes for the best presentation. Congratulations to Javier Masquijo, MD, for receiving the most votes for his technique on Tibial Tubercle Periosteum Transfer for Patella Instability.
